Counseling Overview

How we can help

Your school counseling team is passionate about helping students to succeed in all areas of life.  This includes growing in their faith, meeting all high school requirements, preparing for life after high school, and navigating social/emotional issues as well.

Finding Passion

Our school counselors work with students to help them to identify their God-given strengths and talents. This helps to build spiritual purpose, individuality, and confidence. This contributes to developing a passion for post-high school plans. These plans may include college, military, trade school, or employment.

Social Emotional Support

Our Counselors also provide social emotional support for students. High school can be tricky to navigate with high emotions and new situations to navigate. Our counselors are highly trained to assist students through difficult situations. Students are our number one priority, and we do our best to ensure that every student feels cared for and knows that they are a precious child of God. We all have challenging days, but we can help to make those days a little better.

Career Exploration

FIND YOUR CALLING!

High school is a great time to start exploring careers. Based on career interest areas, students can make informed decisions about courses, colleges, and careers. We encourage students to job shadow and ask questions of those who are in actively working in the field a student might have interest in. We also encourage each student to explore their own strengths and interests which can be done through Naviance, a platform on which every student has an account.  Naviance serves as platform to access excellent resources for career exploration, self-discovery questionnaires and college & career readiness.

College & Career Planning

Helping Each Student Plan for Their Future

Whether it is 9th course selection, applying for college, exploring different types of financial aid, researching various scholarships, or choosing a college or career, quality guidance during a student’s high school years is critical. Just like any quality high school, Lutheran North strives to help students in the areas of academic achievement and career consideration.

Co-op

Cooperative Education Program

Senior students can participate in our co-op program to gain real life work experience, develop professional skills, and prepare for their future goals. Students will leave school early to work at a paying job while completing career-related assignments to earn high school credit. The benefits include learning teamwork, professionalism, and networking. The program requires 10 hours of work during the week (Monday-Friday).

Curriculum & Scheduling

Course Offerings and Scheduling Timeline

Lutheran North offers a robust, Christ centered, college prep curriculum.  Incoming 9th graders will select their courses in March after attending Academic Orientation Night, while returning students will select their courses in February after class presentations and guidance from the counseling department and conversation at home.  The counseling department is ready to answer any questions you might have when selecting the courses that will help your student grow during your time at Lutheran North.

Dual Enrollment

EARN CREDITS BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL

We work with Concordia University Ann Arbor and Macomb Community College to help our students earn credits beyond high school. Dual enrollment allows our students to choose from classes not currently available on campus and provides them with a head start in college. The program is open to any student in 10th – 12th grade who maintains a 3.5 cumulative GPA or better. Students can take up to 10 courses during their time at LHN.

Students will work with our counselors to select courses that will benefit them in their educational journey. The State of Michigan is billed for the authorized amount of tuition and fees.

NCAA & NAIA ELIGIBILITY

PREPARING FOR COLLEGE ATHLETICS

Students who aspire to play collegiate sports need to start preparing academically as well as athletically.  Eligibility varies depending on the level (NAIA, D1, D2 or D3), and it may be tough to identify which level a student will play at in college until the end of their high school career.  To ensure that the student is eligible, we encourage the student to take as many core classes (English, Math, Science, Social Studies & Foreign Language) as possible during their time at Lutheran North.  A strong GPA in 16 or more core classes is a student’s ticket to NCAA eligibility.

To get started, create an account through the NCAA eligibility center.

Technical Training

real-world skills in the classroom

Juniors and Seniors at Lutheran North can explore many different vocational programs through the Frederick V. Pankow Center.  The Pankow center offers everything from Auto Tech & Auto Body courses to PC Programming, TV & Broadcasting, Culinary, Horticulture, Criminal Justice, Elementary Education and so much more. These career and technical education programs are designed to foster pathways into potential career choices and provide students with entry-level skills and an understanding of the opportunities in each career pathway.

Standardized Testing

ACT & SAT TESTING

With many colleges accepting applications without an SAT or ACT score our students may not feel the need to take a standardized test.  Even though many colleges are “test-flex” or “test-optional” our counseling department still encourages students to take the SAT, ACT, or both during the winter/spring of junior year and again during senior year to improve on those scores.  Many schools may return to applications that require a test score.  Additionally, test scores can help students earn valuable scholarship dollars, a seat on the Macomb All-Academic Team and so much more.  To sign up for these tests, use the links below:
