Celebrating 45 Years of Lutheran Education: Honoring Gary Gutenkunst

The Lutheran North community is invited to join us in celebrating the retirement of Gary Gutenkunst and honoring his extraordinary 45 years of faithful service in education, mentorship, and Christian leadership.

Throughout his remarkable career, Gary has impacted countless students, families, schools, and communities through his dedication to Lutheran education and his passion for helping young people grow academically, spiritually, and personally.

Gary earned his degree in Education from Concordia University Nebraska and later received his Master’s Degree in Psychology from Concordia University Chicago in Illinois. His commitment to education and student development has guided every chapter of his career.

Over the past 45 years, Gary has faithfully served in a variety of teaching, counseling, leadership, and coaching roles across the country. His journey in education began as a 5th grade teacher in the Kansas City Public Schools before serving as a 5th grade teacher at Mount Olive Lutheran School in Richmond, California.

He later moved to Detroit, where he served at Zion Lutheran School as a 7th and 8th grade teacher and eventually principal. Gary also taught 8th grade at St. Andrews Catholic School in Detroit and served as Assistant Principal at St. Hedwig School, where he also coached basketball.

Gary then returned to California to serve as an 8th grade teacher at Grace Lutheran School before continuing his coaching career at Concordia University Chicago in River Forest as Head Basketball Coach.

His leadership in Lutheran education continued at Lutheran East, where he served as principal and teacher, positively influencing students, families, and faculty alike.

For the past 21 years, Gary has been a treasured member of the Lutheran North family. During his time at Lutheran North, he has faithfully served as School Counselor, Physical Education and Health teacher, and basketball coach. His compassion, wisdom, leadership, and encouragement have made a lasting impact on generations of students and colleagues.

Please join us as we honor Gary Gutenkunst for his dedication, leadership, and lifelong commitment to Lutheran education. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
