Student Spotlight: Matthew Hielscher - Eagle Scout

By: Isabella Gelfusa - Junior

Boy Scouts is a great way for young boys to build character and make friends. There are many ranks within the Boy Scout organization, the highest being the Eagle Scout. Matthew Hielscher has been a part of the Boy Scouts since he was in kindergarten. Only 5% of people within Boy Scouts actually make Eagle Scout. When asked why he decided to pursue being an Eagle Scout, Matt said it was because it’s a “good program that teaches you many skills”. He also said he has made many great friends through this program. A minor accomplishment that got him to this point were him earning his merit badges. There are different classes you must complete to become an Eagle Scout. Matt says that the first class was definitely the hardest for him, but he overcame these challenges. His Eagle Scout project consisted of him giving back to the camp that he has gone to since he was 6 years old. Matt said he had a few setbacks in his journey that included his dad’s funeral and having to balance school and the scouts. He said his faith in Jesus helped him overcome these struggles.

Jesus helped me get through all those stressful times and helped me accomplish my goal of becoming an Eagle Scout.
