ROCHESTER HILLS – What do you get when you throw several of the state’s top boys golf teams and top individual players onto the same course?

One incredible tune-up to usher in the championship season for boys golf.

With respective county and area tournaments coming up, as well as MHSAA regionals in two weeks – along with some cooperating weather – and several golfers and talented teams are starting to wind up for the stretch run.

Macomb Lutheran North’s Lance Milton emerged from the field of several All-State-caliber competitors as the medalist, topping the 53-golfer field Monday during the Catholic High School League Bishop Tournament championships at Oakland University’s Katke Cousins Golf Course with an even-par round of 72.

“Winning this is  great going into the (Macomb County) tournament and the regionals are only a couple of weeks away,” said Milton, a fourth-year varsity veteran. “Then from regionals hopefully going into states. The last few weeks will go by fast. I hit the ball well today and I hope to keep it going. Our whole team has been playing well this season, so we want to make it to the state finals.”

A total of 24 golfers broke 80 on the warm but breezy day on the tough, rolling hills course at OU, including 12 golfers who shot 76 or better to reach the medalist stand after the event.

Meanwhile, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s put together an impressive play-six, count-four team score of 301 to win the team title. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook (306) and Birmingham Brother Rice (306) tied for second with Cranbrook getting the nod in the standings due to a fifth-man tiebreaker.

Detroit Catholic Central was one stroke back at 307, while Detroit U-D Jesuit (314), Warren De La Salle (316), Macomb Lutheran North (322), Toledo St. Johns Jesuit (334) and Dearborn Divine Child (338) rounded out the nine-school star-studded field of several state ranked programs.

Six of the nine schools are ranked in the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association rankings in either Division 1 or Division 2. Catholic Central is currently ranked No. 1 in the state in Division 1 with De La Salle ranked sixth and Brother Rice 10th. In Division 2, Lutheran North is ranked fifth, Cranbrook ninth and St. Mary’s 10th.

The day nevertheless belong to St. Mary’s.

“We started out the season really fast and had some good scores. We kind of plateaued there a little bit and today we had one of our best outings of the season,” noted St. Mary’s assistant coach Danny Thompson, who filled in for head coaches Joe Becani and Tom Brecht. “We had four kids place in the top 10 and five kids break 80. You know you shoot well as a team when your No. 5 shoots a 77 and that scores doesn’t even figure into your team score. When everyone plays well like this on the same day and you shoot 301, that is going to help you win tournaments like this. And this was a tough field. There’s a lot of really good golf teams in the league this year.”

St. Mary’s indeed had four of its six golfers land in the top 10, led by sophomore Will Matyus in who tied for second with a 74, while senior Mikey Karwaski tied for sixth at 75 and junior Dominic Prezzato (76) and senior Jude Yono (76) tied for ninth. Senior Evan Little tied for 13th but his score did not even factor into the team score, as the Eaglets displayed great depth on this day.
