Mustang Minute - October 30, 2026
Lutheran North Families,
After weeks of odd schedules filled with half days, assemblies, parent-teacher conferences, fall breaks and testing days, it is refreshing to get back into a “normal” routine with five consecutive days of uninterrupted education. I am proud of what our teachers and students accomplished during the first quarter, but I am eagerly awaiting what the second quarter will bring. The transition from one quarter to the next provides students with an opportunity to match the success they had during the first quarter, or a chance to reset and find a way to be more successful during quarter two. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to our wonderful teachers or counseling office if you have any questions or concerns.
During chapel this week we were fortunate to hear from President Dave Davis, Mr. Dumar and Mr. Felten. President Davis, the district president from the state of Michigan, traveled to Lutheran North from Ann Arbor to share what he shares almost everywhere he goes…READ YOUR BIBLES! President Davis is committed to reading the scriptures and encourages our students, faculty and staff to do the same. Christ reveals Himself to us in His word. Mr. Dumar tackled apologetics and shared 9 ways in which we can be certain that God’s word is indeed true. Mr. Felten used Friday as an opportunity to remind our students that the free gift of candy that many of our students will receive is nothing in comparison to the free gift of salvation that belongs to each one of them (and it is much, much sweeter!).
Outside of the classroom there is still much going on. Late October and early November can be quiet and exhilarating at the same time. Regular seasons are done, but playoff runs are happening as we speak. Both volleyball and football begin their district play. Volleyball begins next week Wednesday at home, and football goes on the road tonight with aspirations for a third district title in four years! Cross country participates in regionals this Saturday with hopes of both team and individual state qualifiers, and our swim and dive team is also looking ahead to their regional meet. HOSA is gearing up for their big competition next week at Fraser High School, and our Theatre program is ready to put their hard work on display next Friday and Saturday!
Campus is and will continue to be busy each week with lots of opportunities for involvement. Please continue to keep an eye on our calendar for upcoming events. Even on quiet weeks, the campus is always bustling. Whether it’s our junior parent night, a Mustang Spirit Meeting, our theatre production, a fall sports banquet or our upcoming State of the School Address on November 19th, there are always ways to stay connected and get on campus.
We hope you enjoy this week’s edition of the Mustang Minute. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions you may have.

🍂 Lutheran North Student Council Fall Food Drive 🍂
This fall, we have an opportunity to be a blessing to our neighbors! ❤️ Our Student Council is partnering with Trinity Lutheran Church in Utica to help stock their food pantry shelves and provide local families with the ingredients they need to enjoy a warm, comforting holiday meal.
As we prepare for Thanksgiving and Christmas, let’s remember that even the smallest act of kindness can make a BIG difference. Every box, can, and donation helps support families in our community and reminds them that they are cared for.
📅 Food Drive: November 1–20
Let’s come together as a school community to spread kindness, share God’s love, and make sure more families have food on their tables this holiday season!
🏆 And don’t forget — the class that donates the most will win a Comfy Cozy Day! 🧸
Thank you for helping Lutheran North be a blessing to others! 💛🖤
Coming soon, powerschool lunch!
We are excited to announce that we will be adding a cashless lunch payment option for our students through Power Lunch! This will provide families with a convenient way to add money to their students’ lunch account without having to send cash to school.
We will continue to accept cash for lunch purchases, but we are hopeful that the new cashless option will provide an additional, convenient choice for families.
We are currently working through the final details of the system. As soon as we know how parents can upload funds to their student account, we will communicate those instructions with the school community.
We appreciate your patience as we get this new option up and running and look forward to providing our families with another convenient way to manage student lunch accounts!

DONAVON RILEY: FROM DARKNESS TO GRACE | Saturday, November 21, 8:15 AM – 3:30 PM at St. john rochester
On November 21, St. John Lutheran Church & School, Rochester, invites you to a special event featuring Rev. Donavon Riley as he addresses the deeply personal challenges of mental health and addiction. Drawing from nearly two years of parish ministry as well as his own powerful journey as a former addict and convert from atheism, Rev. Riley brings a raw, unflinching perspective to these modern struggles.
Grounded in a rich Lutheran theology of grace, his message and gift for storytelling moves beyond self-made solutions to shine a light on the true rest, healing, and hope found in Christ alone.
Whether you are personally struggling, supporting a loved one, or seeking to care for your community, come be encouraged by the daily reality that we do not have to carry our heaviest burdens alone. Join us for an inspiring, honest conversation on moving from shame, guilt, or heartache to the promises of the Gospel. RSVP by November 7th.
We expect this event to sell out, so act quickly! $50 per person (non-refundable) | Catered lunch by Vince & Joe's 1011 W. University Dr., Rochester MI, 48307 | stjohnrochester.org | 248-402-8000
The Historical Pumpkin Patch Is Back!
It's that spooky time of year again! For the sixth year, AP U.S. History students have transformed ordinary pumpkins into historical figures and events from American history.
What started as a fun little Halloween project has become quite the APUSH tradition here at North! And every year, the students seem to take it up another notch. From quirky creations to artistic masterpieces to feats of engineering, they never disappoint! The excitement this year was especially fun to see as students built on the creativity of the classes before them.
And of course, there is a little friendly competition! Faculty and staff serve as the "Electoral College," while students cast their ballots in the popular vote.
It's a little history, a lot of creativity, and one of my favorite classroom traditions. This is what we do in APUSH!
History is dead. The stories aren't.

TANNER OLSEN COMING ON NOVEMBER 13TH FOR A Student ASSEMBLY
Hi!
I’m Tanner.
I'm an author, spoken word poet, and speaker passionate about helping people put words to hope, grief, faith, and the everyday living of life. Through poetry, storytelling, and humor, I hope to invite you to slow down, pay attention, rest in the love of God, and remember that this life—even in all its ordinary and complicated moments—is a gift.
Over the years, I've had the privilege of traveling across the country to speak and perform in churches, conferences, and schools. Some people have called me a "stand-up poet-theologian," which feels like a fitting description of what I try to do: blend honesty, grace, and a little humor to create work that's relatable, accessible, and rooted in hope.
Whether I'm sharing a poem, a prayer, or a story, my hope is always the same—that you'll feel seen, encouraged, and a little less alone.
I’m the author of multiple books, including All the Things I Say to God (Zonderkidz, 2025) and Getting Through What You’re Going Through: Notes and Poems for Hoping and Becoming (Zondervan, 2026).
You can follow my work on Instagram, Facebook, and Substack.
