Mustang Minute - October 23, 2026
Lutheran North Families,
One quarter down, three to go! The end of the first quarter marks different milestones for each grade level. I am especially proud of our freshman who have conquered the first quarter of their high school careers! They navigated their first day of school, first high school tests and quizzes, and their first homecoming week. They’re now veterans! Well, not quite, but we hope they are a little more comfortable and confident than they were on August 19th. For our seniors, the end of the first quarter brings with it different feelings and emotions. It marks the last time they will walk into the building on the first day of school as a Mustang, and the last time they will experience a Lutheran North homecoming week as a student. But although their time as Mustangs is inching closer to the end, our staff and faculty is excited to continue educating them, make lasting memories with each student, and using each day as an opportunity to pour into them the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
During this week’s chapels we had an opportunity to hear from some tremendous speakers. Pastor Schrader came to us from Our Savior in Armada and reminded our students of the incredible blessing a Lutheran education is. Mr. Wesley spoke about the story of the paralytic man who was forgiven and then healed, paralleling this to our spiritual life in which Christ forgives and heals us. Mr. Brandt spent Friday telling our students to repent and then respond in faith by sharing God’s love with others.
Outside of the classroom it was (and is, we still have Friday night and Saturday activities) an exciting week. This week has been filled with opportunities to honor our seniors for their contribution to Mustang athletics. These seniors have given an incredible amount of time and energy to Mustang athletics, and we are forever grateful for their efforts.
Our soccer team’s season came to an end in the district championship on Thursday night, but not before an incredible victory over #7 ranked Grosse Pointe North on Tuesday night. The mustangs scored with 1:55 left in regulation to win 1-0! Our girls’ cross-country team was crowned BWAC champs, and our very own Sam Whitlam and Josh Macri were crowned as individual champions of the conference, earning conference MVP honors (And don’t forget coach Tim, our BWAC coach of the year!). I will continue to keep you up to date with our other clubs, athletics, and our upcoming theatre production (buy your tickets soon!).
Finally, we cannot forget our beloved staff member, Mrs. Kim Scott. Mrs. Scott is retiring from full-time ministry at LHN, where she has faithfully served her alma mater for the last five years. Everything we have tasked Mrs. Scott with is better than before she arrived. She has elevated the LSEM ministry at LHN, poured countless hours into the students she interacts with, and brought joy to our students and faculty every day she is in the building. Mrs. Scott will always be a Mustang, and we wish her the best as she moves on to a new chapter in her life.
As always, we hope that you enjoy this week’s version of the Mustang Minute and pray that you and your family have a wonderful weekend.

Coming soon, powerschool lunch!
We are excited to announce that we will be adding a cashless lunch payment option for our students through Power Lunch! This will provide families with a convenient way to add money to their students’ lunch account without having to send cash to school.
We will continue to accept cash for lunch purchases, but we are hopeful that the new cashless option will provide an additional, convenient choice for families.
We are currently working through the final details of the system. As soon as we know how parents can upload funds to their student account, we will communicate those instructions with the school community.
We appreciate your patience as we get this new option up and running and look forward to providing our families with another convenient way to manage student lunch accounts!

DONAVON RILEY: FROM DARKNESS TO GRACE | Saturday, November 21, 8:15 AM – 3:30 PM at St. john rochester
On November 21, St. John Lutheran Church & School, Rochester, invites you to a special event featuring Rev. Donavon Riley as he addresses the deeply personal challenges of mental health and addiction. Drawing from nearly two years of parish ministry as well as his own powerful journey as a former addict and convert from atheism, Rev. Riley brings a raw, unflinching perspective to these modern struggles.
Grounded in a rich Lutheran theology of grace, his message and gift for storytelling moves beyond self-made solutions to shine a light on the true rest, healing, and hope found in Christ alone.
Whether you are personally struggling, supporting a loved one, or seeking to care for your community, come be encouraged by the daily reality that we do not have to carry our heaviest burdens alone. Join us for an inspiring, honest conversation on moving from shame, guilt, or heartache to the promises of the Gospel. RSVP by November 7th.
We expect this event to sell out, so act quickly! $50 per person (non-refundable) | Catered lunch by Vince & Joe's 1011 W. University Dr., Rochester MI, 48307 | stjohnrochester.org | 248-402-8000
