Mustang Minute - October 2, 2026

Lutheran North Families,

It is hard to believe that the homecoming week is ending.  I’ve been fortunate to be a part of 11 homecoming weeks at LHN, and without a doubt, it is one of my favorite weeks each year.  It is such a joy to watch the faculty and staff participate in themed dress days (often together…see the social media pictures of Gru, I mean Mr. Dumar, and his physics students).  We got to know the homecoming court a little better on Wednesday as Mr. Hiddings and Mrs. Beens helped lead a “Get to know you” Trivia Game Show.  Our band, who has been hard at work all year, led the school in the fight song at the end of chapel each day in preparation for the highlight of the school week, our legendary pep rally, filled with games, class competitions, performances by dance and cheer, and lots and lots of energy.

While the school week has ended, the weekend festivities are just beginning.  As you receive this letter, our ladies have just completed their quest to become powderpuff champions, our soccer team is warming up for a BWAC tout with North Branch and our football team is gearing up for a matchup under the lights with the Blue Devils of Richmond with a chance to move to 6-0 on the season and put themselves in the driver’s seat for a chance at a BWAC title.  Tomorrow night we welcome our students into our building for the homecoming dance.  Our student council has been hard at work putting together the dance which is themed as “A Night in Rio.”  We thank the student council leaders and members for all their hard work!

Another blessing of homecoming is the opportunity to welcome back our alumni!  This year is extra special as we welcome back our first graduating class who is celebrating their 50th high school reunion!  A lot has changed in the last 50 years, but as with all our alumni, they will always be Mustangs!

In chapel this week, Mr. Hardy started us off with liturgy on Monday that focused on the commandments encouraged our students to follow Christ’s command to love your neighbor as yourself.  On Tuesday, Pastor Shuler from Faith in Troy highlighted the parable of the lost sheep.  He reminded our students that Christ comes after us, just as the shepherd searches for the lost sheep.  On Thursday, Mr. Hackbarth used Luke 14 to remind us that our sins are humiliating, but our humility leads us to back to the gospel.  On Friday, we had an opportunity to hear from Mr. Hiddings who spoke about the return of the prodigal’s son and how we too, are welcomed home because of what Christ has done for us.

Please keep our students in your prayers, especially during this homecoming weekend.  Pray for safety, smart decision making, and that our students are always reminded of the true homecoming that awaits them as children of God.  As John 14:2 says, “In My Father’s house are many rooms.  If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?”

We hope you enjoy this week’s version of the Mustang Minute.  If you have any questions, please reach out.  Have a great weekend and Go Mustangs!

AN IMPORTANT LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Dear LHSA Parents,

The new Federal Education Tax Credit program has the potential to provide significant financial assistance to families for educational expenses. However, for eligible LHSA families to benefit, the State of Michigan must first opt into the program. At this time, Michigan has not opted into the program.

Beginning in January of 2027, individuals who donate to an approved Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) may receive a federal tax credit of up to $1,700. SGOs can then provide scholarships to eligible families to help cover qualified K-12 educational expenses.

I encourage you to learn more about the program by reviewing this document (Michigan SGO.pdf) from the Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools or by visiting the SGO Guide website here.

For many LHSA families, this program could provide meaningful financial assistance for educational expenses. I encourage you to consider contacting your state legislators and the Governor's office to express your support for Michigan opting into the program. Communication from parents and constituents can play an important role in emphasizing the positive impact this would have on families.

In Christ,

Micah Lorenzen
